Brunei's Scouts Celebrate 77 Years Of Community Service

Scout's Day 2010 was launched yesterday at the Brunei Darussalam Scout Head Office located at the Scout Complex in Gadong.The President of the Brunei Scout Association, Dato Paduka Haji Idris bin Hj Abas, in a speech said that since the formation of the association in 1933, the movement has grown considerably and has been accredited as being up to an international standard.

Dato Paduka Hj Idris added, "The Brunei Scout Association should play an important role as an organisation which orients itself based on volunteer work and services provided to the community such as providing the youth with proper guidance and organising charitable and healthy activities".

He also expressed his hope that the association would one day achieve its mission of being able to provide a proper venue for all leaders and members of the scout association, allowing them to better interact with one another while in a harmonious environment, as well as providing a venue that can be used for their exhibitions. Additionally, such a venue would also positively increase the image of the scouts in the Brunei community."

The scout day was organised in conjunction with the acceptance of the Brunei Scout Association into the 117-member World Scout grouping on July 1, 1981.
Activities held during the event included the presentation of youth scout badges, the second Special Cubboree Award Certificate, a colouring competition, video presentation, the handing over of a computer to the association as well as the launching of the first Brunei Darussalam JOTA/JOTI 2010.

The event also saw the presentation of zakat' to members of the Asnaf Scouts, followed by a donation to scout members who are also orphans. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
